What is paraphrasing ?

A paraphrase is a simplified version of a relatively more complex text for the sake of understanding. It is the expression of what somebody has said or written through using different words/phrases, especially for making it easily understandable. Stephan Bailey says paraphrasing involves changing a text so that it quite different from the source, while retaining the meaning. Effective paraphrasing is vital in academic writing to avoid the risk of plagiarism. He further opines a good paraphrase is significantly different from the wording of the original, without altering the meaning at all. Leki says it is using our own words to report someone else's material or ideas.
